18004MYTAXI announced two free ride days for OC Seniors and Disabled. If you are senior (over 65) or disabled resident of Orange County, you can call in and request a complimentary ride. Riders may receive one free, one way ride up to 5 miles, on Feb 10th and 11th
18004MYTAXI is promoting their bid for a 1.85 million dollar contract for the OCTA Same Day Taxi program. Key aspects of their proposal are the cost savings to both OCTA, $160,000 over two years and a reduction in the rate paid by riders from $2.60 a mile to $2.20 a mile for trips chargeable after a 5 mile OCTA subsidy. Drivers are also required to complete nationally accredited training in CPR, First Aid, Defensive Driving, and Passenger Assistance vs. the current operator.
In the OCTA Same Day Taxi program, riders pay $3.60 per boarding and ride free up to five miles. After the five mile mark, riders pay the balance at regular taxi rates. Seniors and the disabled, after being approved by ACCESS, can request any destination including doctors visits, shopping, or even for personal necessity. Ridership has increased between 400-600% since the inception of the program in 2004 and Yellow Cab of Greater Orange County
has held the contract in one form or another for over 10 years. The program is funded by OCTA. Up to 10,000 rides a month are projected in two years.
Also the Orange County
Taxi Administration Program (OCTAP), the taxi regulatory agency announced a proposed rate increase of 9% going to public hearing on April 17th, 2014. The 18004mytaxi proposal locks in rates to the OCTA and the public, regardless of a rate increase and “buffers” a potential rate increase to ridership, by still offering a discount of about 16% vs. the current rates or proposed rate increases. If rates increase by 9% per the OCTAP hearing, riders could be looking at $3.00 a mile for the after 5 mile portion, instead of an adjusted $2.60 a mile with 18004mytaxi's “buffer” provision.
William Gray, Executive Manager explained he aims to raise the bar of service, especially in South Orange County, while reducing rates to OCTA and the senior and disabled ridership of Orange County. “With our proposal, we drop rates back 5 years, while doubling the level of service.” To reserve rides, call William Gray directly at 714-747-5990. Taxi rides after the 5 mile mark will be charged the discount of $2.20 a mile vs the $2.60 Orange County
approved rate (as proposed to OCTA).
